DOGS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL BEHAVIOURS
Giving our dogs access to natural behaviours is an essential part of their progress towards becoming a well-balanced happy dog. When our Fur Companions are involved in activities that involve instinctive interaction, this releases natural endorphins from the brain which enter the blood stream and give the dog a relaxing feel-good boost.
WHAT ARE NATURAL BEHAVIOURS
Anything the dog naturally takes an interest in helps massively with enrichment needs, this can be any of the following RUNNING, STALKING, HUNTING, SNIFFING, CHEWING, BITING, SCENT MARKING, DIGGING, HERDING, SWIMMING, RETRIEVING, SOCIALISING, PETTING/GROOMING.
Of course, it depends upon the breed of the dog to which activity the love to carry out,
For example, Spaniels, Labradors, Retrievers for playing fetch and retrieving.
Collies for herding
German shepherd for guarding.
Genetics play a big part in enrichment needs for the dog.
THE IMPORTANCE OF ENRICHMENT
If the dog does not receive enrichment, they will show this in their behaviour. Stress and anxiety are evident in a dog that is not enriched with access to natural behaviours, just as humans are enriched by weekend pursuits like Fishing or Sports our dog’s need this escape to de-stress and unwind and feel good in their skins giving more likelihood of calm acceptable behaviour.
