Should we Punish our Dog?
The best possible way to train your dog is by Positive Reinforcement; by punishing the dog we are creating more problems than we are dealing with. Reinforced behaviour is more likely to be repeated because it promotes good feeling and willingness to repeat a behaviour. By using positive punishment, we can in many cases promote anxiety because you are not treating the root cause of a problem you are just suppressing it by creating fear in the dog’s mindset. So, the dog wants to pull on the lead and we tighten the prong collar- ow that hurts so the dog stops pulling the pain goes away (negative punishment) but have we communicated with the dog? Does he understand walking to heel? No, he just knows it hurts if you aversively apply pain to his neck, what does this do to the bond between human guardian and dog Promotes it or reduces it? I will let the reader decide the answer.
